GUEST AND TOURIST FARMS

Tourism on the farm is a growing enterprise. "Farming with people", as some will say. Such an enterprise involves earning money from visitors to the farm as well as sale of farm products to visitors at the  nearby village Saturday market. South African wine tours are well known but little is known about the development of visits to fruit farms, dairy farms, flower farms, sheep shearing etc. Agricultural Shows have been with us for a long time and some have developed into major events.  The Rand Easter Show , The Royal Show and the Bethal Aartapple-fees are examples. The Cape has some big annual events as well but nothing on the scale of the last mentioned. Opportunity exists to develop farm stays , educational tours, conferences, horse trails, hiking trails and other environmentally low impact events. While  4 x 4 trails have become more popular since the ban on the environmentally sensitive beaches, the proliferation of this activity on  environmentally sensitive rural land is developed in a controlled manner. Roads need to be maintained to prevent excessive soil erosion, for instance. The development of game farms combined with tourist activity is first prize. Consider. The following are some examples of farm tourism. Self catering cottages, B7B'S, horse rides, fishing, canoeing, bike riding, educational farm stays for school children and adults, conducted farm tours, wine tasting and off sales, and other products such as cheese, and other dairy products, country restaurants,  conferences, meetings, incentives and events.
